United States

Kavakçi, Prof. Dr Merve

Merve Kavakçi is a lecturer on culture and international affairs at George Washington University. In 1999, she was barred from a position in the Turkish Parliament for refusing to remove her hijab. She is an important symbolic figure for the headscarf issue in Turkey and promotes Muslim women’s rights at events all over the world, criticizing Turkey’s anti-Islamic policies. Kavakçi is also a Hafiza of the Qur’an.

Ozdemir, Mahinur [new]

Ozdemir is a young politician and the first hijab-wearing Member of Parliament of any European country. She was sworn in to the Belgian parliament, while wearing a headscarf. The event garnered mass interest in Turkey, where in 1999 Merve Kavakçi was denied the right to take her oath of office because of her hijab. Ozdemir is of Turkish origin and is a member of the Francophone Christian Democrat party.

Natsiria's Style

Remember Natsiria from our earlier posts? CLICK
She was recently in Manhattan visiting and I made sure to catch up with her since I hadn't seen her in a while. Natsiria is a revert to Islam. I will have to share her story with all of you one day, once I get the detailed version :-). She is such a lovely girl. She is originally Puerto Rican. As you can tell she is drop dead gorgeous mashallah and is very sweet, funny and classy at the same time. Here is what she wore to our outing on the Upper East Side :-)

What I love about Natsiria's style is that it's conservative, simple, elegant, and trendy at the same time. The fact that she chose solid colors but mixed different neutrals together, made her look very appropriate for her young age. Her blouse is very classic, yet her blazer is a bit funky with the small polka dot patterned lining. Her nude purse completes her outfit. I love her lace up peep toe oxford high heels. They are the trendiest shoe of the season. What I also love about Natsiria's look is that she is actually wearing make up but has not over done it. She has lined her deep green eyes with liner and mascara, and just added a touch of lipgloss. Her face looks fresh and isn't drowning in make up. I applaud Natsiria for her clean cut, modest look.

Trending: Feathers

Here a chick, there a chick, everwhere a CHICK, CHICK...

Well, maybe it's not Old McDonald's chick, it could be a Thanksgiving Turkey, or a Duck Duck Goose, we leave the creativity up to you. No matter which bird you pick, make sure you walk away with some feathers for the trend of the season :-)

BBC World Documentary: American Muslim: Freedom, Faith & Fear

Many of you have mentioned that you were interested in seeing the rest of the BBC World Documentary. It has finally been uploaded on youtube. I think it's a very interesting documentary. It would be a great share at interfaith events. I think it would also be a great idea for schools and universities who teach Islamic history or Islamic studies to share the documentary with their students.

Our interview and photo-shoots are in this part :-).

In the second part, you will get to see the best Islamic School in the Country, in Dallas, founded by my father. :-)

Nevnihal's Style

Sometimes there is a lot to say about hijab. But sometimes it's more simple and doesn't need a mouthful of words. Hijab can take a woman from being ordinary to unique. From being just a person in the crowd to being the sophisticated one. There is faith at will, but individuality and style always jumps out. Hijab is a frame that brings out the facial feautures of a woman. It puts aside all the distractions. There are certain faces that no matter what they wear, they glow amongst the rest. Whether they wear a black abayah, a chadoor, a nikab, or a trendy hijab, no matter what type or color they wear, they carry the elegance and honor of modesty.

Sometimes words can't express what hijab means and how it beautifies us. Sometimes a picture is a thousand words...

Faith & Fashion with Sarah Elenany

Most of you have heard of the lovely Sarah Elenany, Fashion Designer and Creative Director of Elenany Label based out of the U.K. She has been feautured all over the news including BBC, Al Jazeera, Emel Magazine, Cosmopolitan, The Guardian and many more publications.

We love her innovative prints, her cool designs, and her hip style. As the creator and owner of a rapidly growing label, Elenany is contagiously spreading around the world. Ms. Elenany has a women's line, men's line, and also designs funky jewelry.

She recently did a photoshoot in Turkey, so we cought up with the busy designer to ask her a few questions about her work.  Here is what she had to say...

Location: Sirkeci Train Station
Photographer: Melek Reyhan Dinc

At what age did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I've always wanted to be a designer -I love inventing things that solve problems, then making them look really great and easy to use. The fashion aspect comes into it because I really love clothes and always found it difficult to find stylish yet modest clothes -so I thought I'd do something about it and create a brand which produces practical, easy to wear clothes, that look really great!

How did you go about pursuing your dreams?

Well firstly I studied product design at degree level -which is where I discovered that I loved graphic design and what a powerful tool it was for presenting ideas. When I graduated I kicked off my label with a small collection which I launched online.

What are some challenges or obstacles you ran into being a hijabi designer in the fashion world?

I found that generally the fashion world wasn't interested in hijabi fashion. And in fact, the director of one of the most important fashion PR agencies in London told me, "Honey, fashion isn’t interested in anything controversial or political or religious, it’s shallow!”.

So I kind of had to turn my back on mainstream fashion and carry on doing what I believed in and where there was a need, otherwise I might have had to show models in frilly knickers modelling my clothes to get their attention, which I wasn't prepared to do.

How do you come up with the unique prints you design?

I think about what it means to me to be a Muslim -whether it's everyday actions like praying, or whether it's the spirit of freedom, then try to capture this in a graphic. Then I play with the repetition element until i think it looks right!

Describe to us the Elenany Woman? What is she like?

She is independent. She has the confidence to express herself. She is bold. She is kind.

Do you have any exciting projects you are currently working on that you would like to share with our readers?

I designed some uniform for The Scouts which is set for international release in January 2012, which is really exciting!
